“More and more we understand that a college education or some form of college education is critical to success, and therefore it ought to be easily accessible and affordable,” Rep. Jim Roebuck said Aug. 9, 2018, at a hearing about Pennsylvania Promise legislation to make higher education affordable.

“We have a real problem here in Pennsylvania,” Rep. Mark Longietti said July 18, 2018, at a hearing about Pennsylvania Promise legislation. “We’re 47th in the country in terms of per-capita funding for college education. We have great institutions of higher education, but we’re not providing the resources.”

“We have some of the finest institutions of learning in Pennsylvania, and we need to make it affordable for our students,” Rep. Chris Sainato said July 18, 2018, at a hearing about Pennsylvania Promise legislation to make higher education affordable.

“Many of the citizens in my community don’t even think about college because they think they can’t afford it,” Rep. James Roebuck said June 6, 2018, when he and fellow legislators announced Pennsylvania Promise legislation. “This makes college accessible.”

“We’ve given a promise to our young people,” Rep. Jordan Harris said at a June 6, 2018, press conference. “We’ve said to them, ‘If you go to school and you do well, you can go to college,’ but we’re giving them a check for insufficient funds because we aren’t providing them with the resources to be able to be successful.”

“This is a common-sense type of legislation that will allow us to grow our economy while also training students for our future workforce,” Rep. Stephen Kinsey said June 6, 2018, when he and fellow legislators announced Pennsylvania Promise legislation.

“I think there’s a crisis in Pennsylvania as far as affordability of higher education,” APSCUF President Dr. Kenneth M. Mash said when discussing college affordability and Pennsylvania Promise on the March 25 edition of “Pennsylvania Newsmakers.”
